There is a huge overlap in the principles and benefits of Yoga and Pilates. In fact, Joseph Pilates actually based some of his exercises on yoga postures, adapting them for the purpose of postural rehabilitation, back care and core stability.
Today there are many “styles” of Pilates classes that range from basic beginners where the original 32 exercises are adapted for accessibility to more advanced dynamic classes where the original 32 are practiced as a continuous sequence.
I taught Pilates exclusively for 5 years before I ever came to yoga and was delighted to find that my years of Pilates had in fact prepared me well for yoga and continues to inform my teaching and practice today.
Pilates exercises are precise movements practiced in sets and repetitions that target your core abdominal and lower back muscles to help improve your posture, flexibility, balance and coordination and strengthen and tone your whole body.
More than just physical exercise, Pilates enhances mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing!
Experienced Pilates Enthusiasts

Private lessons are not just for beginners and sports people. It might just be your thing. And without going as far as to train as an instructor you can advance your practice. There is always something new to learn and new ways of experiencing the exercises.
Private lessons will refresh your enthusiasm, refine your technique and expand your repertoire of exercises beyond what is usually available in a general class.
Pilates for Leisure Activities, Sports & Fitness

Pilates exercises are well-designed and when performed in a balanced sequence, they offer a targeted and efficient route to improved body awareness, control and quality of movement.
Due to the one-sided nature of certain activities like golf, cricket, badminton and tennis the body adapts and develops misalignment. Pilates exercises are designed to address imbalances, recover muscular symmetry and realign your posture.
A regular program of Pilates exercises specific to your activity, sport or fitness goals will enhance your performance, speed up your recovery time and reduce your risk of injury.
Private Pilates Lessons for Adult Beginners
February 14, 2018
Pilates exercises focus heavily on technique and improving the quality of your movements.
As with yoga, group classes tend to be general and vary in class numbers which makes it challenging for you as a brand new beginner to be certain that you are getting it right!
After a few private lessons you will have a good understanding of the basic techniques you will need to practice safe and effective Pilates exercises and with time and practice build the confidence to join a group class or practice at home.
The Benefits of Pilates
January 15, 2018
Improved strength, stamina, muscle tone and bone density. Using a variety of core focused exercises Pilates creates a natural girdle of strength and tone around your hips, waist and lower back and develops tone and definition in your arms and shoulders.
Improved posture. These simple and effective exercises will help you to unlearn poor movement and postural habits. With regular practice you can reduce the symptoms and recurrence of back pain.
Improved flexibility. Specific stretching and mobility exercises will improve your flexibility and lead to fewer injuries with improved performance in fitness and sporting activities.
Improved balance and coordination. With specific alignment and concentration exercises you can once again feel stable and confident in your body's ability to manage your daily activities.
Better breathing. Integral to Pilates, synchronising your breathing with your movements helps to improve your cardiovascular health, wellbeing and your ability to relax and therefore lower your stress levels.
Improved system function. Learning to use your body in a more efficient way has a positive effect on your respiratory, circulatory, immune and lymphatic systems which means that your body becomes more proficient at oxygen uptake, utilisation of nutrients and waste removal so you will feel more energised, be less susceptible to the effects of stressful environments and be more resistant to seasonal colds and flu.
The Eight Principles of Pilates
February 14, 2018
1] Relaxation to release physical tension and let go of stressful thoughts to help you to focus on the quality of your breathing and the precision of your movements.
2] Pilates is both a mental and physical conditioning system, a complete coordination of body and mind that develops focus and Concentration.
3] To restore movement and muscular balance Pilates focuses on correct postural Alignment. This reduces the risk of injury and stress to joints and the surrounding muscle tissue.
4] Pilates' lateral or Thoracic Breathing helps you to maintain your core abdominal engagement reinforcing correct muscle recruitment and movement technique.
5] It's all in the preparation and Centring prepares your mind to stay connected to your body as you learn how to move from a strong centre.
6] Your brain and muscles learn and remember sequences of movement. The process of learning how to synchronise your movements with your breathing will develop your Coordination and is excellent mind-body training for sportsmen and women.
7] Slow Movements: All of the exercises are done using slow, controlled, precise movements which, when practiced correctly makes Pilates one of the safest forms of exercise.
8] Stamina: Develops by progressively adding challenge to your core stability, improving your muscles memory and making your movements more efficient.

"I have tried not to miss Dawn's classes as
I can guarantee that I feel better after her interventions..."
I have attended Pilates classes run by Dawn Smith, for some years now and wish that I had heard of her sooner. She has been a most inspirational teacher.
Great knowledge underpins her classes which she communicates with warmth and humour.
Dawn is always particularly careful of individual needs, remembering personal details, enabling her to modify exercises to suit those with injury so that everyone is included at all times.
I have tried not to miss Dawn's classes as I can guarantee that I feel better after her interventions, regardless of any adverse personal circumstances.
Dawn has a positive effect on people. Her calming voice is a wonderful addition to her practical skills which she conveys through her well explained and helpful exercises.
Her lessons are a thoroughly uplifting and physically beneficial experience.
I am more than happy to endorse such a professional, personable, caring teacher. - Virginia Vivian BA. MA.
